How unsolicited donation offers work
Fraudsters impersonate wealthy donors, lottery winners, business owners, or people claiming a terminal illness. The promised gift is used to build hope before an “agent,” bank, courier, lawyer, or tax official asks for a release fee. The sender may also collect identity documents for later fraud.
Safe verification steps
- Assume a large unsolicited personal donation is unsafe until independently verified.
- Do not pay taxes, courier costs, certificates, transfer fees, or account-opening charges to receive a gift.
- Do not send a passport, Social Security number, bank statement, or selfie with identification.
- Search exact phrases from the message; recycled donation scripts often appear in prior scam reports.
Stop contact and preserve the sender address, payment request, telephone numbers, and attachments. Report the account to the email provider and report attempted financial fraud to the FTC or FBI IC3. If money was sent, contact the payment provider immediately.
