Can You Get Money Back After a Scam? Realistic Recovery Options

After fraud, victims ask one question first: Can I get my money back? The honest answer depends on how you paid, how fast you report, and whether funds are still traceable. No legitimate service can guarantee recovery — anyone promising 100% refunds for an upfront fee is likely running a recovery room scam.

Recovery by Payment Method

Credit cards

Strongest consumer protections. Unauthorized charges may qualify for chargebacks if reported promptly. Contact the issuer immediately.

Debit cards and bank transfers

Harder than credit. Banks may investigate unauthorized ACH or wire transfers if reported within 24–48 hours. Outcomes vary.

Zelle and peer-to-peer apps

Treat like cash. Some banks reverse Zelle if the receiving account is frozen quickly. See Zelle scam refund trick.

Gift cards

Very difficult. Report to the card issuer immediately — partial freezes are occasionally possible.

Cryptocurrency

Extremely difficult. Blockchain transfers are usually irreversible. Beware fake "tracing" services.

Wire transfers (Western Union, MoneyGram)

Report within minutes. Transfers picked up overseas are rarely recovered.

Immediate Steps That Improve Recovery Odds

  1. Call your bank using the number on your card — not a callback number from the scammer.
  2. File a police report — banks often require case numbers.
  3. Report to the FTC and FBI IC3.
  4. Document everything — screenshots, emails, wallet addresses, phone numbers.
  5. Freeze credit if personal data was exposed.
  6. Follow our full get help guide.

What Not to Do

  • Pay "recovery fees" to cold callers
  • Grant remote access to your computer to strangers
  • Send more money to "release" a larger refund
  • Trust guaranteed recovery ads on social media

Will the FTC send me a refund check?

The FTC pursues enforcement actions; individual refunds happen only in specific settlement programs — not via random emails.

Should I hire a private investigator?
